The SOS Remote application offers a versatile control interface for the Science On a Sphere® (SOS) system, designed for iPhone*, iPod Touch*, and iPad devices. This software facilitates a range of operational functions that enhance user interaction with the SOS display environment.

SOS is a large-scale, immersive visualization system that employs computers and video projection technology to render planetary data onto a six-foot diameter sphere, creating an animated globe for educational purposes. Its primary role is to serve as an engaging tool for demonstrating Earth System science to audiences of varied ages in an accessible and visually compelling manner.

The SOS Remote app improves upon previous control options, such as the Wii Remote, by providing a streamlined user experience and expanded interaction capabilities. Key functionalities include:

• Intuitive adjustments to the sphere's orientation
• Control over dataset playback
• Loading of presentation playlists stored on the SOS computer
• Comprehensive search and browsing of the SOS Data Catalog, with the ability to select datasets randomly for display
• Access to dataset descriptions and presenter notes during presentations
• Efficient playlist creation directly from the iPad interface
• Annotation and zoom features on loaded datasets
• Dynamic layer management, including toggling dataset layers and pips, and modifying transparency levels
• The ability to partition the sphere into 2-4 vertical slices to focus on specific dataset segments
• An intuitive three-step process for precise sphere alignment

*Note: The iPhone and iPod Touch versions support a subset of these features, whereas the full functionality is available on the iPad.

Requirements for operation include:

• An active Science On a Sphere® (SOS) installation
• Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity to the SOS control computer
• SOS Software Version 5.5.0 or higher
